Research and insights

Research and data play a central role in understanding the performance, behaviour and perceptions of visitors across Telford and Shropshire. Insight is highlighted as a core function within both the Telford and Shropshire Destination Management Action Plans, supporting evidence-based decision making for partners and stakeholders. Both plans recognise research as essential for tracking performance, assessing impact and informing future direction.

Research and data are also recognised within the Telford and Shropshire LVEP strategic priorities, forming part of the wider programme to strengthen local leadership, improve decision making and align activity with national priorities.

This page brings together key datasets, reports and insight tools used across the Telford and Shropshire LVEP including:

Telford and Wrekin Council STEAM report

A STEAM survey, uses the Scarborough Tourism Economic Activity Monitor (STEAM) model, a valuable tool for assessing the economic impact of tourism within a specific area. By gathering and analysing local data—such as visitor numbers, accommodation occupancy rates, event attendance, and visitor spending patterns—the STEAM model provides detailed insights into how tourism contributes to the local economy. This bottom-up approach ensures that the unique characteristics of Shropshire’s tourism sector are accurately represented, offering crucial information to support strategic planning and development.
